Also called: kit, kitting, equipment package.
The B-camera package went out as one thing and came back as one thing. Three weeks later somebody opened the case on a shoot, and the mains lead was not in it.
Kits group for handling. They should not group for tracking — every member keeps its own identity, condition and service record.
Grouped for handling, separate for tracking
Nobody wants to check out a body, two lenses, a charger, four batteries and a tripod as eight transactions. As a kit it is one handover — and a kit can hold another kit.
Treat the whole case as a single item in the register and you lose per-item history: you cannot tell which lens has been serviced, which battery is failing, or which component is actually out on loan.
Incomplete returns are the recurring failure
A kit goes out complete and comes back missing a cable. Nobody notices until the next user opens the case, by which point the person responsible has moved on and the trail is cold.
The fix is checking kits in by contents rather than as one object, so the gap is found at the counter by the person who created it. It takes seconds longer at check-in and saves an investigation later.
What belongs in a kit
Items that are genuinely always used together, and where the grouping matches how people ask for equipment. If someone would say "give me the B-camera package", that is a kit.
Resist kitting things that are merely stored together, and resist kits that overlap — an item in three kits creates availability conflicts that are hard to reason about. Consumables usually do not belong either; they are counted, not tracked, and a kit that includes gaffer tape will never check in complete.
What goes wrong without it
Treating a kit as one item destroys per-component history, so a failing battery or an unserviced lens is invisible until it fails in use.
How Itefy handles it
In Itefy, container items such as tool boxes and flight cases can be enabled as kits: reserve or check out the whole kit in one go, while maintenance and issues stay per item. Kits are available from the Startup plan upward. Read more.
