Snipe-IT alternative: it tracks assets, it doesn’t book them
Snipe-IT is free, open source, and genuinely good at the job it was built for — tracking IT assets. Booking equipment for a date in the future is a different job. We installed it to be certain, rather than guessing from their website.

Choose Snipe-IT if
- You are tracking laptops, licences, accessories and consumables for an IT department.
- You have someone who can run, patch and back up a PHP and MySQL server.
- You need SAML, LDAP or SCIM and do not want to pay for them.
- Budget is the binding constraint. Free is free, and we cannot beat it.
Choose Itefy if
- People need to book equipment for a date in the future.
- You want maintenance schedules that repeat on their own.
- The equipment is cameras, tools, vehicles or AV gear rather than laptops.
- You would rather not run a server at all.
What Snipe-IT is built for
Snipe-IT describes itself as “free open source IT asset management”, and every part of that is accurate. It is AGPL-3.0 licensed, you can run it on your own server for nothing, and it has been in active development since 2013 with 14,600 stars on GitHub. Its object model is IT-shaped: assets, licences with seats, accessories, components and consumables, plus asset models, depreciation and audits.
Itefy is built for equipment that gets booked, borrowed and maintained — cameras, tools, test gear, vehicles, AV kit. Both products keep a register and both check things in and out. What follows is where they stop overlapping.
The one thing it does not do
Snipe-IT has check-out and check-in. You can hand an asset to a person, a location or another asset, set an expected check-in date, and get an email when it is late. What it has no way to do is reserve something for next Tuesday.
There is a requests feature, and it is the closest thing: a user can request a specific asset, or any asset of a model, and an admin approves it. But a request carries no dates. It is a queue, not a calendar.
We did not take their website’s word for this
Four days before writing this page we published a comparison that said a competitor had no reservations. They did. We had inferred it from their marketing pages, and we were wrong. So for this one we installed Snipe-IT 8.3.4 on our own machine, ran the migrations, and read the database schema directly.
Across all 54 tables there is no reservation, booking or schedule construct of any kind. The two request tables carry no booking dates — checkout_requests has created_at, canceled_at and fulfilled_at, and nothing else. The assets table records when something was last checked out and when it is expected back, but there is nowhere to store a future booking window, so there is nothing for conflict detection to act on.
Their own users have been asking for this since February 2018 — issue #5081 is still open, still labelled ready for dev, with over a hundred comments. Issue #11356, “check out at future date”, has been open since 2022. Both were open when we checked on 31 July 2026. It is an open-source project; that could change, and you should check.

Maintenance, precisely
It would be easy to overstate this, so here is the precise version.
Snipe-IT does have maintenance records. Each one carries a name, a type, a supplier, a start date, a completion date, a cost, notes and a warranty flag. That covers repairs and service contracts perfectly well.
What the table has no column for is recurrence — no frequency, no interval, no repeat, no next-due date. A maintenance in Snipe-IT is a one-off record of something that happened or is happening. There is no mechanism that says “service this every six months and tell someone when it is due”.
One correction to that, in their favour
Snipe-IT does have a recurring schedule — for audits. There is an audit interval setting and a next-audit date on every asset, so it will tell you when an item is due for physical verification. So “Snipe-IT can’t schedule anything” would be false. The accurate claim is narrower: no recurring or preventive maintenance schedule.
In Itefy, preventive schedules repeat on their own and land on the same calendar as bookings, so a service window blocks the item rather than colliding with a reservation. Faults are reported from a phone with photos and tracked through repair.
What “free” actually costs
We are not going to tell you Itefy is cheaper than Snipe-IT, because it is not. Self-hosted Snipe-IT is $0, with unlimited assets and unlimited users, and it includes SAML and SCIM. Itefy Basic is $180 a year for 500 items and three seats. On price alone that is not a contest, and any comparison page telling you otherwise is selling.
What the $0 does not include is the server. Snipe-IT needs PHP 8.2+, MySQL or MariaDB, Apache or IIS, a dozen PHP extensions, and someone to do upgrades, backups and security patching. If you have that person, the software really is free. If you do not, that work has a cost even when it has no invoice — which is precisely what Snipe-IT sells back through their hosting plans.

Their unlimited-users model also beats ours at any real headcount, in the same way AssetTiger’s does. If you have forty people who need occasional access, we charge for that and they do not.
Where Snipe-IT is the better choice
- It is genuinely free, and genuinely open source. AGPL-3.0, self-hostable, no vendor lock-in, and if we disappeared tomorrow your Snipe-IT install would keep running. That is a real form of security we cannot offer.
- SAML, LDAP and SCIM — in the free build. Itefy offers “Sign in with Google” and nothing else: no SAML federation, no enforced SSO, no SCIM provisioning. If your IT department requires them, Snipe-IT gives them away and we do not have them at any price.
- Licence management. Software licences with seat tracking, assignment and expiry are a first-class object. Itefy has no equivalent.
- Unlimited everything — assets and users, on every tier including free.
- 55+ languages, set per user.
- A large ecosystem — 14,600 GitHub stars, a documented JSON REST API, third-party mobile apps, and integrations including Jamf, Kandji and Jira.
- Recurring audits with a per-asset next-audit date, which we do not have as a named workflow.
What switching involves
Snipe-IT exports to CSV and has a full REST API, so getting your data out is straightforward — being open source, nothing is locked in by design. Import to Itefy with the guided wizard: column mapping, row-by-row review, and existing QR or barcode labels keep working.
Expect the object model to change shape on the way across. Snipe-IT’s licences, accessories, components and consumables map onto Itefy’s items and inventory rather than one-for-one. If licence-seat tracking is a core part of what you do, that is a reason to stay.
How we researched this
- We installed it. Snipe-IT v8.3.4, official Docker image with MariaDB, migrations run, database schema inspected directly, then removed. July 2026.
- The absence of a booking construct is a statement about the schema of that install — all 54 tables — not an inference from their marketing pages. We got that wrong on another comparison page four days earlier and would rather not repeat it.
- The two feature-request issues were re-checked through the GitHub API on the day this page was written, and both were open. They are an active project; verify before relying on it.
