The list
Locations are a hierarchy — a site contains buildings, a building contains rooms, a room contains shelves — and the list shows that, with an icon for each kind.
Adding one
+, then:
- Name
- Kind — site, building, room, storage, vehicle, container, or general
- In/under — the location this one sits inside, if any
- Description
- Position — see below
Naming a place while standing in it
This is the one thing the phone does that a desk cannot.
The Position section shows a map with a draggable pin. Tap My location and it drops the pin where you are; drag it, or tap the map, to correct it. The address fills in by itself from the position.
That is how a container on a site, or a van, gets a real position recorded by somebody who is actually there — rather than guessed later from a postcode.
The coordinate field is a read-out. It only becomes editable when the phone cannot give a position and there is nothing to drag.
Vehicles and containers
Vehicle and Container are mobile kinds. A location of one of those keeps a movement history, so where a van has been is a question with an answer.
Editing and deleting
Open a location to edit it. Deleting a location that has children promotes them one level up rather than deleting them with it.
What stays in the web app
Location statistics, value rollups, and moving whole subtrees around are web app work.
